<p>A method of manipulating a fingerprint image, with associated feature points, to create a synthetic latent fingerprint image. The method comprises; receiving an original image 2; transforming the initial image 4 onto the background of a synthetic image, but using different transformations on separate regions of the fingerprint; using the same transformations for each associated region, to map the original position features 6 to the correct points on the synthetic image; outputting 8 the synthetic latent fingerprint image. The transformations may include resizing, rotating, smearing, or adding image noise. An original image may be used to generate one or more different synthetic images, which in turn may each be used to generate more. Feature points may include pores, dots, incipient ridges, ridge end protrusions, or minutiae, which in turn may comprise ridge endings, ridge bifurcations, short ridges, islands, spurs or crossovers. This invention has possible use in forensic analysis training.</p> |
