A transparent sheet is attached onto an inclined surface of an original guide plate of an image reading apparatus, and similarly, a transparent sheet is attached onto an inclined surface at an edge portion of a reading guide plate, thereby preventing an original from being chipped by the ground glass-like inclined surfaces and illumination light from being diffused by the ground glass-like inclined surfaces.

1. An image reading apparatus, comprising:
a first glass plate having translucency over which an original is transported and caused to pass; and an image reading portion that reads the original by illuminating the original via the first glass plate; wherein a first inclined surface of the first glass plate for guiding the transported original to an upper surface of the first glass plate includes ground glass depressions and projections at an edge portion of the first glass plate, and a transparent sheet is attached onto the first inclined surface with interposition of a transparent adhesive or a transparent double-sided tape.
