摘要 A composition is provided for use as a friction modifier for an automatic transmission, comprising a long chain hydrocarbyl amine having one or two additional groups on one or two different amine nitrogen atom thereof of the structure —R3-C(=0)X(R4)c. R3 is an alkylene group or a group comprising a group of 1-4 carbon atoms or a chain of 2 to 9 carbon atoms interrupted by one or two nitrogen or oxygen atoms within the chain; X is nitrogen or oxygen, and R4 is a long chain hydrocarbyl group, or H, or —R3-NHR5. The compound does not contain a primary amino group.

A method for lubricating a transmission, comprising supplying thereto a lubricant comprising: an oil of lubricating viscosity; and a hydrocarbyl amine, the hydrocarbyl group thereof having about 12 to about 22 carbon atoms, said amine having one or two groups in addition to said hydrocarbyl group, on one or more amine nitrogen atoms thereof, such additional group or groups independently being of the structure —R3—C(═O)X(R4)c, wherein each R3 is independently an alkylene group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a group comprising a chain of 2 to 9 carbon atoms interrupted by one or two nitrogen or oxygen atoms within the chain; X is nitrogen or oxygen; c is 2 when X is nitrogen and 1 when X is oxygen; and each R4 is independently a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to about 20 carbon atoms or a group represented by the formula —R3—NHR5 wherein R5 is a hydrocarbyl group of about 12 to about 22 carbon atoms, or, if X is nitrogen, R4 may be H; wherein the amine comprises two groups of the structure —R3—C(═O)X(R4)c on an amine nitrogen atom.
