752,969. Irradiation of blood. WEHRLI, F. July 6, 1954 [July 7, 1953], No. 19711/54. Class 81(2). In an appliance for treating blood, oxygen or ozone is introduced into the blood in order to produce a foam and the blood is irradiated with ultra-violet light while in this condition. The apparatus comprises two graduated containers 5, 6 of which one 5 receives blood through a connection 7 and this passes upwards into the interior of a central tube 11, through holes in its lower end, and it is mixed with oxygen or ozone received through a central connection 8. As a result of this mixing, the blood is formed into a foam which emerges from the flared top of the tube 12 on to an inclined plate 13, whence it drops into the second vessel 6 in the liquid form, to be finally drawn off at a connection 16. The top of the apparatus comprises a cover having a quartz partition 26 through which ultra-violet light passes from a lamp 25 to the foamed blood. A complete outfit is described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown) and comprises a trolley having cylinders of oxygen or ozone feeding through pressure reducers into the apparatus described above, from which the treated blood passes through a filter to a tube for introduction to a patient. It is also proposed to employ a pump to circulate the blood continuously, so as to give it repeated treatments and also to receive blood from a patient and then treat it and return it to him. |
