Treating keratin fibers, preferably hair, comprises applying a composition containing fatty substance to the keratin fibers, applying a mechanical tension to the keratin fibers, and exposing the keratin fibers under mechanical tension to microwaves at a pressure of 50000-250000 Pa in presence of a solvent in vapor form in contact with the keratin fibers and without completely drying out the keratin fibers during the entire exposure to microwaves.
