<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably prevent preignition of each cylinder by disposing an ion current detecting device 4 only in one cylinder.SOLUTION: In shipping inspection of an internal combustion engine, ion current detecting devices are mounted on ignition plugs of all cylinders (step 1), and an ignition timing of each cylinder is gradually advanced to determine a limit of ignition timing just before generation of a sign of preignition (steps 3-7). The amount of ignition timing advance as the preignition limit of each cylinder is stored in an engine controller as a learning correction value H1-H4 of each cylinder, and then the ion current detecting devices excluding that of #1 cylinder, are demounted (step 11). After shipping, the ignition timing of each cylinder is controlled by using the learning correction value H1-H4 of each cylinder. When the sign of the preignition is detected from ion current of the #1 cylinder, preignition is equally prevented in all of the cylinders by retarding ignition timing.</p> |
