Enriched steady state microbial consortiums for microbial enhanced oil recovery and in situ bioremediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated sites, under anaerobic denitrifying conditions, are disclosed.

1. An isolated consortium of microbial species wherein said consortium comprises;
a) at least one first species of the genus Thauera having a 16S rDNA nucleic acid molecule having the nucleic acid sequence that has at least 95% identity to SEQ ID NO: 15; b) at least one second species having 16S rDNA nucleic acid molecule having the nucleic acid sequence that has at least 95% identity to a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:16, 19, 21, 23, 24-28, 30-41, 67 and 68; and c) at least one third species having a 16S rDNA nucleic acid molecule having the nucleic acid sequence that has at least 95% identity to a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 17, 18, 20, 22, 29, 54, 69 and 86 and combinations thereof.
