The method involves determining a first straight-line steering angle indicative of a steering angle at which a motor car is traveling (S12). Comparison of the first straight-line steering angle with a second straight-line steering angle is determined (S13) before entering to an operating condition. A loss signal is passed to a user of the car, and a defect entry is stored (S14) in a fault memory and/or parameter of a driving assist system when a deviation of the first straight-line steering angle from a second straight-line steering angle is greater than a predetermined threshold value. The driving assist system is designed as a transverse leading driving assist system. An independent claim is also included for a motor car.
