PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic shelf label system and a method for operating the electronic shelf label system.SOLUTION: The method for operating the electronic shelf label system is performed by a gateway which provides update data provided from an electronic shelf label server to a plurality of electronic tags through wireless communications. The method for operating the electronic shelf label system includes the steps of: determining a tag group to which the update data is to be transmitted; transmitting a PUMP (Price Update Multi-Poll) frame including link schedule information and tag identification information regarding the tag group; and transmitting a block data frame including the update data for the tag group in response to reception of a response message received from at least one electronic tag belonging to the tag group. The tag group comprises at least one electronic tag.
