The method involves vertically or horizontally conveying an individual article (14) on a horizontal conveyor (20) along a defined and/or variable positioning portion contacted against on both sides of a manipulator (30). A gap (18) of variable or definable length is formed between the individual article or a group of articles (16) in a downstream of the manipulator. A downstream conveyor section (26) of the horizontal conveyor is moved equal to or in opposite of a conveying direction (24) of the horizontal conveyor. An independent claim is included for a device for forming gap in individual article and/or groups of articles within a continuous article stream.
