PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for an electrolytic capacitor, which has a high spark voltage and is excellent in heat resistance in spark voltage and electrical conductivity, and to provide an electrolytic capacitor using the same.SOLUTION: The electrolyte for an electrolytic capacitor contains an electrolyte salt containing a nitrogen-containing cation, a colloidal silica, and an organic solvent. The colloidal silica contains as surface modifying groups an OH group and an ONHgroup at a content ratio of 1:25 to 99:75.
