[Also in Group XL (a)] The output cavity resonator of a klystron has a plastically deformable wall which is sufficiently rigid to prevent microphony. Tuning is effected by depressing the wall by a mechanism which is then removed, thus facilitating the use of water-cooling and magnetic focusing fields. The tube shown comprises two resonant cavities 22 and 23 formed in a copper body 21 and communicating with one another via a coupling aperture 24. The outer walls of the cavities are formed by plates 26 and 27 respectively, which are soldered to the copper body 21. An output coupling waveguide 35 of rectangular crosssection is closed by a mica window 36 secured in a ferrochromium flange 37 by powdered glass. The supply wires 14 to an electron gun comprising a heater 11, cathode 12 and focusing electrode 13 are secured in a glass bulb 16 which is sealed to the plate 26 by a fernico ring 18. A portion 42 of the plate 27 is made thinner than the remainder and supports a collector electrode 30. A cylindrical extension 45 of the plate 27 is closed by a water-tight lid 46 provided with inlet and outlet water connections 47 and a flexible diaphragm 48 through which projects a screw 55 of the adjusting mechanism which comprises a yoke 51 engaging the block 21 and a housing 53 containing a reduction gear driven by a knob 54. During manufacture the output gap 33 is made too long by a factor of from 10 per cent to 50 per cent. After the tube has been exhausted the operating voltages and water cooling are applied, and adjustment effected by depressing the collector electrode 30, thus deforming the wall 42. The electrode is pushed slightly past the point at which maximum output is obtained, and the pressing force then removed so that a slight resilient reaction occurs and the collector electrode returns to the optimum position.</p>
