Into foods deficient in growth-promoting substances for Lactobacillus bifidus, the predominating micro-organism in the intestines of infants fed with human milk, is incorporated either N-acetyl-d-glucosamine or a naturally-occurring substance, other than mucin, having at least one N-acetyl-d-glucosamine residue, such as saliva, pancreas, a blood group substance, e.g. blood group substance A, B or O. The additive may be 0,5-5 per cent of the solids of the food. Foods treated are those having a basis of dried cow's milk. |
