A communications system for use in low visibility environments (e.g. a smoke-filled building) comprises at least two communication units, wherein each communication unit is connected to display 16 and a processor. At least one of the communication units is connected to a thermal imaging (infrared) camera 20. Each communication unit is configured to communicate with each of the other communication units over a wireless network. Each respective processor is configured to receive a video data from the thermal camera over the wireless network. Upon receipt of the video, the processors are further configured to process image frames to enhance the visibility of the imaged scene (e.g. using edge-detection techniques) and display the enhanced images. The system is of particular application in fire-fighting wherein captured infrared video data may be wirelessly transmitted to a remote unit (e.g. a control/command centre). The camera and display may be mounted upon a fire-fighters helmet 10. The processor may be mounted in a streaming relay unit (SRU) 14. The communications system allows for the two-way transmission of captured infrared scene data and additional data such as environmental data, building plans or maps between a first communication unit (e.g. carried by a fire-fighter) and at least a second communication unit (e.g. a control/command centre in a vehicle, such as a fire engine). A communications apparatus and method of communicating information in a low visibility environment are also disclosed. |
