<p>A device for manipulating charged particles using an axial electric field comprises an outer electrode 8 extending continuously along a portion of the length of the device, and a plurality of inner electrodes or electrode portions 10 arranged between the outer electrode and the longitudinal axis along which the charge particles travel in use. The inner electrodes or electrode portions are spaced apart along the length of the device to provide gaps, and the gap lengths may vary as a function of the position of the gaps along the length of the device. At least some of the inner electrodes or electrode portions are maintained at a different voltage to the outer electrode. The electric field generated by the outer electrode may penetrate the gaps between the inner electrodes or electrode portions to provide the desired potential profile along the longitudinal axis. The device may be an orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight mass analyser.</p> |
