A parking/loading area 39, defined by one or more coordinates, is an exception to a parking restriction 38 (e.g. double yellow or red lines). It is implemented by detecting a vehicle in a monitored area including the parking/loading area and determining whether the vehicle is positioned within the parking/loading area and has permission to park there. Data is received by the vehicle from a kerb-side transmitter and onward-transmitted to determine whether it is positioned in the parking exception. The locations of the parking/loading area and vehicle (24, 22, Fig.2) may be indicated to the vehicle (20, Fig.2), including determining whether the vehicle is positioned within the parking/loading area based on a signal received from a kerb-side transmitter when the vehicle is near the parking/loading area. The parking exception may be a loading bay or a parking exemption for disabled drivers or blue badge holders. It is not necessarily marked on the road, thereby reducing the likelihood of other motorists from stopping there. |
