PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having high luminous efficiency and a long life and a material for an organic electroluminescent element for achieving the same. SOLUTION: The aromatic compound of a specific structure has aπconjugated heteroacene skeleton crosslinked with a carbon atom, nitrogen atom, oxygen atom or sulfur atom. The material for the organic electroluminescent element is provided. The organic electroluminescent element has one or more organic thin film layers containing a luminescent layer between a negative electrode and a positive electrode in which at least one layer of the organic thin film layers contains the material for the organic electroluminescent element.
