A fuel for gas turbine engines comprises a vanadium-containing petroleum residue fraction and a minor proportion of an aluminium salt of an organic acid, this salt being soluble in the petroleum residue fraction. The petroleum residue fraction may be a furnace oil and the amount of aluminium salt may be such that the fuel contains up to 3 per cent of aluminium. The presence of the aluminium salt prevents or minimizes the build-up of inorganic deposits or formation of scale on the turbine blades and other parts of the engine and thereby prevtnts or minimizes corrosion. The aluminium salt may be a salt of fatty or naphthenic acids, particularly of (a) stearic acid, (b) fatty acids (e.g. ethylhexoic and isononanoic acids), obtained by oxidation of higher aldehydes produced by the oxo reaction using, as oxo feedstock, petroleum olefins or olefin polymers such as diisobutylene, or (c) fatty acids obtained by the partial oxidation of paraffin hydrocarbons. According to the Provisional Specification, other oil-soluble or oil-insoluble compounds of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, copper or lead may be employed, as set out in Provisional Specification 745,621, instead of the aluminium salt.
