The present invention relates to a method for preparing styrene or a derivative thereof; and a method for preparing a polymer using the same. The styrene or the derivative thereof can be obtained in a biological manner which has higher specificity than a chemical process. Further, the styrene or the derivative thereof can be obtained in an environment friendly and economical manner in which a lignin degradation product is economically and efficiently obtained by using lignin as a raw material and then used as a substrate.
