Cation-exchange membranes are produced by subjecting a thin sheet of an aliphatic vinyl polymer, particularly polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, to the action of a sulphonating agent at a temperature below 60 DEG C. The sulphonating agent may be chlorsulphonic acid, either concentrated or in solution in ethylene dichloride, a mixture of chlorsulphonic acid and sulphuryl chloride or a solution of sulphur trioxide in ethylene dichloride or sulphuric acid. |
