[Also in Group XII] A method of removing nitrous and acid impurities from air comprises conducting only a portion of the contaminated air to a container containing a basic medium and then conducting this air admixed with basic gas to a conduit conveying the remaining portion of the air and thereafter washing the mixture. As shewn acid air formed in a treating apparatus 1 is drawn by a fan 13 through a conduit 3 in which are situated pipes 4, 10 provided respectively with funnel mouths 41, 101 adjustable slides 5, 12 and non-return valves 6; 11, both pipes being connected to a container 7 containing ammonia, such that part of the air is drawn through the pipe 4 into the container and becomes charged with ammonia and is then drawn through pipe 10 back into the conduit 3 whereon the mixture passes to a washing chamber 14 from which cleaned air emerges at 16 and the basic washing water is returned to a chamber 19, to which also the ammonia from the container 7 may be run, of a neutralizing pit 20 and mixed with acid water from the treating apparatus 1 through pipe 21, the neutralized liquid then passing through a filter 23 and discharging at 22. The basic gas can also be supplied from a pressure container, in addition to the container 7 which, opens out into the conduit 3 preferably by way of a nozzle and can be connected with the pipe 10.
