<p>The invention provides a rubber composition for a tire which has the great advantages of low heat build-up (high fuel economy), high wet grip performance, and high abrasion resistance, and a pneumatic tire with a tire component (especially, a tread) formed from the rubber composition. Provided is a rubber composition for a tire, including: a diene polymer; silica; and a compound represented by the formula (2) shown below, the diene polymer being a modified diene polymer obtained by reacting a compound (A) and a compound (B), and the compound represented by the formula (2) being present in an amount of 5 to 23 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the rubber component, wherein the compound (A) is an active alkali metal-terminated conjugated diene polymer obtained by polymerizing a conjugated diene monomer alone or with an aromatic vinyl monomer in the presence of a compound (C); the compound (B) is a modifying agent containing a functional group; the compound (C) is a chemical species obtained by reacting an organic alkali metal compound with a compound represented by the formula (1) :
