An electrode for a lead or nickel-iron accumulator or a primary battery consists of a framework of a synthetic plastic material which has been brought into the condition of a foam and in which the active material is embedded. The plastic material may consist of polystyrene, polyethylene or other polyolefine, polyfluorolefines, polyurethanes or silicones and the electrode is made by mixing the active material which may be lead dust, red lead or litharge with the plastic material and converting the mixture into a foam mechanically or chemically, for example by adding a foamer such as a nitrile that splits off gas when heated. The mixture is placed on a conducting grid in a steel vessel which is placed in an oven. The vessel has a movable lid which is pressed inwards till the plate is of the required thickness.
