1. A computer-readable storage medium that is not a propagating signal, the computer-readable storage medium comprising executable instructions that when executed by a processor cause the processor to effectuate operations comprising:
determining, based on a total volume of traffic information available, a sample size of mobile handset devices from a selected geographic area of interest; responsive to receiving a request for a traffic report, establishing search criteria based at least in part upon the determined sample size; collecting traffic information from the geographic area of interest based on the established search criteria; deriving aggregated real time traffic data from the collected traffic information, wherein the aggregated real time traffic data comprise at least one of vehicle related data or pedestrian related data; generating a traffic report based on the derived traffic data.
