A digital broadcast receiver includes a demultiplexer for demultiplexing a digital television (DTV) stream to a video stream and a supplementary steam, where the supplementary stream includes an Event information table (EIT) describing an event which has one or more closed captioning services. The receiver includes a controller for decoding a caption service descriptor providing closed captioning information and which is in the EIT, the descriptor comprising information that indicates whether a digital television closed caption service or a line 21 closed caption service is present in the video stream. The receiver further includes a video parser for parsing the video stream and outputting MPEG-2 video data and user data from the parsed video stream, a video decoder for decoding the MPEG-2 video data, a caption decoder for decoding caption data in the user data and a video combiner for combining the decoded caption data and MPEG-2 video data. |
