The present invention relates to an electronic shelf system and a method for operating the electronic shelf system. The method for operating the electronic shelf system according to an embodiment of the present invention is performed in an electronic shelf gateway which is wirelessly connectable to a plurality of electronic shelf tags and provides data provided from an electronic shelf server to the electronic shelf tags. The method for operating the electronic shelf system comprises: a step for providing a first sleep message including the remaining time until a first wakeup time point, to the electronic shelf tags; a step for selecting at least one update tag to which update data is to be provided; and a step for providing the update data as well as a second sleep message including the remaining time until a second wakeup time to the at least one update tag, when the first wakeup time point arrives.
