The present invention provides a dual rate drive type horizontal electric field mode liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates facing each other while being spaced apart from each other; a gate wire and a data wire formed on the inner surface of the first substrate and crossing each other to define a plurality of pixel regions; a thin film transistor connected to the gate wire and the data wire, and disposed on or under each of the pixel regions; a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor; a common electrode formed at an upper portion of the pixel electrode, wherein one side thereof facing the other side thereof corresponding to the thin film transistor extends to an upper portion of the gate wire to overlap with the gate wire; a black matrix formed under the second substrate; a color filer layer formed under the black matrix; and a liquid crystal layer formed between the common electrode and the color filter layer.
