[Also in Group VIII] Separators are made by mixing an inorganic powder with a binder in the form of a solution or emulsion, drying the mixture and grinding the product into a fine powder which is then pressed between and around the plates of a battery or moulded into sheets or on to glass wool sheets under heat and pressure. The inorganic powder may consist of kieselguhr, silica gel or bentonite, and the binder may be a solution or emulsion of polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or a methacrylate which may contain a wetting agent. Glass wool, dried paper pulp, wood flour, jute and hemp may be mixed with the inorganic powder. |
