摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an aluminum titanate sintered compact having enhanced mechanical strength without sacrificing advantageous characteristics of a low thermal expansion coefficient and a slow crack propagation speed.SOLUTION: In a method for manufacturing an aluminum titanate sintered compact wherein an equimolar raw ingredient mixture provided by mixing aluminum oxide and titanium dioxide is heated so as to generate and concomitantly sinter aluminum titanate, a liquid phase is generated by heating an admixture obtained by adding Lato the raw ingredient mixture at a temperature equal to or higher than the eutectic point of titanium dioxide and lanthanum oxide, and particles are grown in columnar shapes in a state where the columnar particles are being scattered within a matrix of non-columnar particles.
