PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having a wide viewing angle and displaying satisfactory.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display 100 includes: a vertical alignment type liquid crystal cell 10 which is driven by a passive matrix drive mode; a first and a second polarizing filters 20 and 30 arranged in a crossed Nicol relationship; a first retardation section 41 located between the first polarizing filter 20 and the liquid crystal cell 10; and a second retardation section 42 located between the second polarizing filter 30 and the liquid crystal cell 10. The first retardation section 41 has a characteristic of being Nx=Ny>Nz, and the second retardation section 42 has a characteristic of being Nx>Ny>Nz. An absorption axis of the second polarizing filter 30 has an angle of 45° with respect to a liquid crystal director direction N, and also, it is orthogonal to a slow axis of an in-plane direction of the second retardation section 42. A turn-on voltage value is set to be 95% or greater and less than 100% of a voltage value at which a front surface contrast becomes maximum. |
