The method (1) involves testing capacity of a low-voltage battery (80) during activation procedure of a powertrain (51), so as to prevent a passage of the powertrain from being in an active state in the event of risk of failure of an on-board network (81) related to excessive aging of the low-voltage battery. The capacity of the low-voltage battery is tested by closing a relay of a starter (70) of a thermal engine for length of time ranging between 30 milliseconds and 80 milliseconds, where a management module manages starting/restarting of the thermal engine. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer readable memory unit storing a program for controlling a powertrain mounted in a car (2) a computer program for controlling a powertrain mounted in a car.
