The device (D) has a control unit (MC) arranged to determine difference between upstream and downstream rotational speeds of a free wheel (RL1). The unit prohibits combustion in a thermal engine (MT) when the difference is lower than a threshold value. The combustion is prohibited to reduce torque available on a driving shaft (AM) that is actuated by the engine prior to authorizing coupling of the driving shaft with an input shaft (A2) of a gearbox (BV) by locking of the wheel so as to limit shock resulting from locking.
