The device (1) has a generation unit (2) generating and transmitting a torque set point to a thermal powertrain (7), and a filtering unit (4) filtering the torque set point so as to deteriorate time of passage of the torque into mechanical clearances (9) to avoid jolts. An acquisition unit (3) acquires external data to detect a situation of critical life of vehicle. A correction unit (5) corrects the filtered torque set point so as to shorten time of passage of the mechanical clearances and general filtering time when the acquisition unit detects the situation of critical life. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a thermal powertrain.
