The present invention relates to a thickener for an aqueous paint, and an aqueous paint composition containing the same. The thickener for an aqueous paint according to the present invention is a cellulose ether blend comprising two or more types of compounds selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyalkyl cellulose cross-linked by an aldehyde compound, a hydrophobic group-substituted hydroxyalkyl cellulose cross-linked by an aldehyde compound, and a hydroxyalkylalkyl cellulose cross-linked by an aldehyde compound. In addition, an aqueous paint containing the same is excellent in paint properties like workability, storage, a repairing property, a levelling property and color expression.
