The method involves operating the energy consumer in multiple different energy modes. A maximum reactivation time is provided to the energy consumer. The reactivation time defines a time which requires the energy consumer for a transition from an energy mode to another energy mode. The energy consumer automatically selects the latter energy mode from multiple energy modes based on the predetermined maximum reactivation time. The former energy mode characterizes an operational condition of the energy consumer. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computing unit for executing the energy consumer operating method; and (2) a computer program with program code unit stored in a machine-readable storage medium.
