The invention relates to means for identifying and establishing the authenticity of valuable items. The technical result consists in increasing the reliability of the establishment of authenticity by virtue of increasing the check criteria. The device is in the form of an apparatus which comprises a display and a means for scanning the item under investigation, which means is connected to the display and to a means for generating data identifying the item, which means is connected to a means for reading from a database relating to the item for identification. The device comprises a means for comparing the result of the scanning of the item under investigation and calculated information relating to the item as well as for transmitting this information to the display, and means for determining the geometric dimensions and weight characteristics of the item for identification, which means are connected to the means for generating data identifying the item.
