Provided is a positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which has excellent battery characteristics such as charge/discharge cycle durability when in use at high voltage, while exhibiting excellent swelling suppressing performance in cases where a battery is stored at high temperature after being charged at high voltage. The present invention uses surface-modified lithium-containing composite oxide particles which have a specific composition, and to the surfaces of which zirconium hydroxide or zirconium oxide and at least one lithium salt selected from the group consisting of Li2ZrF6, Li2TiF6, Li3PO4, Li2SO4 and Li2SO4·H2O adhere.
