A tube such as a television picture tube 32 is baked out by first surrounding the tube with an enclosure 15, and then placing the assembly into an oven 11. The enclosure is hinged at 25 and latched at 26 to facilitate opening. Rollers 23 support the tube, and an eyelet 20 can be engaged by a hook for moving the assembly into and out of the oven. The baking temperature can be attained more quickly, since after removal from the oven, the enclosure prevents too rapid cooling of the tube. The cover of the enclosure may be thinner, or have a better heat-radiating surface, than the remainder, to provide a differential effect. The phosphor screen may be more quickly dried and baked by this arrangement.
