PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide various devices and methods for minimizing or treating high-altitude sickness.SOLUTION: A handheld device 100 for delivering a therapeutic amount of nitric oxide to an individual's lungs when the individual is at high altitude. The device includes a reservoir 102 containing nitrogen dioxide, a conversion cartridge 104 coupled to the reservoir 102, and a patient interface 106 coupled to the conversion cartridge. The conversion cartridge converts nitrogen dioxide into nitric oxide before it reaches the patient interface.
