Chitosan -Amelogenin Hydrogel for In Situ Enamel Growth

A composition for re-constructing enamel-coated substrates such as a tooth which includes an amelogenin, chitosan, and water. The composition may also include compounds providing calcium and phosphate ions. Methods using the composition are also provided.

1. A composition for treating dental caries, early dental carious and erosive lesions, and enamel defects resulting from genetic diseases, the composition comprising:
an amelogenin; a chitosan; water; and a sufficient amount of a pH adjusting component such that the composition has a pH greater than about 6.0, the composition forming an organized mineral layer when contacting an enamel surface.
