The present invention relates to: a compound having a novel structure wherein an indole moiety is fused to the terminal of a pyrrolocarbazole moiety so as to constitute a basic skeleton, and various substituents are bonded to the basic skeleton; and an organic electroluminescent element comprising the compound. In the present invention, the compound can be incorporated in one or more organic layer and preferably a luminescent layer such that properties such as the light-emitting efficiency, the drive voltage and the life of the element can be improved.
