PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of compacting granular materials into a product having a combination of characteristics unobtainable by conventional methods by liquid-phase sintering.SOLUTION: Granular materials contain core particles each coated with a metal compound(s) being relatively higher in fracture toughness than the core, e.g. WC or TaC. The coated particles have an outer layer containing a metal e.g. Co or Ni. The coated particles are pressed to form a product, and the product is densified at such a pressure and a temperature as to achieve a maximum density without deterioration of the materials constituting the core particles. |
