[Also in Groups XXI and XXII] A cartridge case or like container is made by winding a sheet of metal or other material into a tube and securing one end of the tube in a frusto-conical groove of a base 4, a liner 6 of plastically deformable material being engaged in the groove and pressed into engagement with the base and the tube. The liner 6, which may be of lead or a synthetic resin, has a flat portion 6c, Fig. 2, and a depending flange 6b and together with the base is placed on an anvil 9 having a locating flange 9a and an axial projection 9b extending into an axial passage 4a in the base 4. A shaft 10 rotatably mounted in a bearing 11 carries the anvil and a rotary tool 7 is mounted in a bearing 13 movable obliquely downwards in the direction of the groove. After placing a weight 12 on the liner, the tool is lowered to engage the flange 6b, and while thus engaged the oblique movement of the tool causes both the anvil and the tool to rotate. When the flange has been bent, the tool 7 and weight 12 are withdrawn and the central part of the liner is removed by a circular cutting tool (not shown). The lower edge of the tube is then inserted in the groove and the groove is closed by pressure. |
