Class 82(2) The resistance to wear of machine parts having rolling surfaces, such as ball or roller bearings and gear wheels, is improved by depositing, by a gas-phase reaction, on at least one of the surfaces taking part in the rolling, a coating consisting of a hard nitride, boride and/or silicide'of titanium. A hard titanium carbide may be additionally deposited on the surface. Nitride coatings may be deposited from mixtures of titanium tetrachloride, hydrogen and nitrogen, silicide coatings may be formed by first depositing titanium from titanium tetrabromide and hydrogen and then converting this to silicide by treatment with a mixture of silicon tetrachloride and hydrogen, and boride coatings may be formed in an analogous manner to that for silicides except that boron trichloride instead of silicon tetrachloride is added to the hydrogen in the last stage. A heterogeneous coating compound of a layer of nitride and a layer of carbide may be obtianed by first depositing a coating of nitride and then depositing thereover a layer of carbide from a mixture of titanium tetrachloride, hydrogen and hydrocarbons suchas methane.
