STRUCTURE FOR SIDE PORTION OF VEHICLE

A structure for a side portion of a vehicle is configured in such a manner that a center pillar is provided with an upper pillar section which has an upper end joined to a roof side rail, and a lower pillar section which has a lower end joined to a side sill. The upper pillar section is configured from a hollow metallic pipe consisting of a high-strength steel plate, is bent so as to protrude outward in the width direction of the vehicle, and has a substantially constant cross-sectional shape. The lower pillar section has a closed cross-sectional shape and formed by joining two press-formed parts in the width direction of the vehicle, the two press-formed parts consisting of a steel plate having lower strength than the steel plate of the hollow metallic pipe of the upper pillar section. The lower edge of the upper pillar section is joined at the outer periphery thereof to the two press-formed parts while being inserted in the closed cross-sectional shape section formed by the two press-formed parts of the lower pillar section.
