摘要 <p>A polyethyleneoxy alcohol is produced by copolymerizing a monohydric alcohol having 12-31 carbon atoms with ethylene oxide in the presence of sodium so as to incorporate therein at least 3, and not more than 7, ethylene oxide groups per molecule of the alcohol, and stabilized by substantially neutralizing alkalinity due to sodium by oxidation with oxygen. The copolymerization may be effected by heating the alcohol to between 150 DEG and 200 DEG C. in the presence of 0.001 to 1 per cent, preferably 0.05 per cent, of sodium and passing in ethylene oxide until the desired number of ethylene oxide groups have been absorbed. The product is then stabilized by passing oxygen through it for about seven days, preferably at 60 DEG C. The product is then preferably allowed to stand in contact with air at 60 DEG C. for a similar period. The oxygen treatment may also be effected at room temperature, a period of 2 months being required, or at 100 DEG C. for about 12 hours. In an example, cetyl alcohol is copolymerized with about 5 ethylene oxide groups and stabilized by passing oxygen through for 7 days and exposure to air for 7 days. The product may be combined with a finely divided friction agent, e.g. carbon black, barium sulphate, magnesia, calcium fluoride or rouge, to produce an antifog material suitable for application to windows (see Group X).</p>
