Provided is a catalyst that is not corroded in an acidic electrolyte or under high electric potential, has excellent durability, and has high oxygen-reducing capability. The catalyst is formed from a metal oxycarbonitride comprising 0.2 mass% or more of each, and a total of 25 mass% or more, of two metals (metal A and metal Z hereafter) selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten, wherein when the metal oxycarbonitride is measured by powder X-ray diffraction (Cu-ka rays), four or more diffraction ray peaks are observed at a diffraction angle 2? between 33° and 43°. |
