Organic compounds are produced by the combination of organic fragments produced when fissionable material, e.g. Uranium 235, disintegrates in the presence of one or more organic compounds. The reaction may be applied to the fragmentation of alcohols, esters, ethers, ketones, carboxylic acids and acid anhydrides, nitriles, amines, amides, hydrocarbons, certain sulphur analogues, halogenated hydrocarbons and organic phosphorous compounds. A large number of specific reactions are listed or exemplified.ALSO:A wide variety of organic compounds are produced by a combination of organic fragments produced when fissionable material, e.g. uranium -235, plutonium -239 or uranium -231 is disintegrated in the presence of one or more organic compounds, e.g. by bombardment with neutrons. It is advantageous to establish a self-sustaining reactor, as is done in an atomic pile, using the reactants as moderators and finely divided widely dispersed fissionable material as fuel e.g. uranium as the soluble uranyl nitrate or sulphate or uranium oxide in the form of a slurry of particle size 10 microns. Water is preferably excluded from the reaction.
