In a process for removing carbonate from and softening water in which the water passes in series, first through a cation-exchange material having a preponderance of weakly acidic groups and charged with exchangeable hydrogen ions and then through a cation-exchange material having a preponderance of strongly acidic groups and charged with sodium ions, a fraction of the water by-passes the first cation-exchange material and passes direct to the second cation-exchange material. The volume of the fraction may be controlled automatically or manually. The hydrogen ion-exchange material may be a polymer of acrylic acid cross-linked with divinyl benzene, and the sodium ion-exchange material, a sulphonated polymer of styrene cross-linked with divinyl benzene. |
