Hammer (10; 12; 14; 16) comprising a head (18; 32; 46; 58) having a striking face (72; 74); a handle (20; 34; 48; 60) affixed to said head (18; 32; 46; 58); said head (18; 32; 46; 58) including angled deflecting pads (84) adjacent said striking face of said head (72; 74), said deflecting pads (84) having deflecting faces disposed at an acute angle to a perpendicular to said striking face (72; 74), at least one of said deflecting pads (84) being disposed on said head (18; 32; 46; 58) at a position to deflect over-strikes from said handle (20; 34; 48; 60). Method of making a hand tool, comprising the steps of forming a head (18) having a handle recess and a working face; mounting a plurality of rods (102) in said handle recess of said head (18); mounting a plurality of spacer plates (110) on said rods (102) at spaced locations; heating said rods (102); and encasing said rods (102) within a handle material while said rods (102) are heated so as to form a handle (20) that encloses said rods (102) and that is mounted to said head (18).
